Small Business, Start Ups, and Entrepreneurs

James & Megan, both mechanical engineers, developed a prototype device that reduces the use of power on mining sites. Discover how we helped them commercialise their new device.

Marketing and mentoring
We introduced them to the General Manager of a mine who has assisted them in testing the prototype, mentored them on their market strategy and introduced them to other mining industry contacts.

Based upon a valuation we prepared, they recently accepted $50,000 in seed capital for a 10% stake by the mine manager.  We also introduced them to a Jobs for NSW advisor to assist them in applying for a $100,000 grant under the Building Partnership grants for development of their MVP (Minimal Viable Product).

Government grants
To assist them with Federal Government assistance, we introduced James & Megan to the regional AusIndustry manager who is assisting them with their R & D registration and preparing a grant application under the Accelerating Commercialisation program.

Economies of scale
On the tax & accounting side we have advised James & Megan on the structure of their company to assist in scaling the business in the future, made sure their ABN & tax registrations are all in order, set up their accounting software and provided some training on using the software and provided some advice regarding pricing of their products.

They also often call or email us with the “What does this mean?, What should I do next?, Is there a better way?, or Who do you know that can help me with this problem?, type questions.

Result
James & Megan have a plan to trial their MVP in 3 months and sell their first units by February 2018, at which time we will introduce them to Angel investor and Venture Capital partners.

Software integration
After assisting them to implement Quickbooks in a way that suited their needs, they indicated they were frustrated their point of sale system and accounting system operated separately, their payroll system did not allow easy confidential access by employees of their personal payroll information, and their monthly & weekly trading reports were not useful.

We have recently completed the installation & training to use a new POS system called VEND, which integrates with Quickbooks; provided training to Mary & Sue and their employees on how to access their personal payroll information from an APP on their mobile phone; and we provide them a 1 page easy to understand weekly trading report in a graph and table form under our Measure, Monitor & Manage (MMM) program.

Result
Mary & Sue say their paperwork for running their business has been halved and implementation of the MMM program has increased their profits by $1,200 per week.
